Motivational Interviewing For New Trainers

MI Training for New Trainers (TNT) (21-35 hours duration)

Many organizations that want to provide high quality MI training to staff have budget issues that get in the way of bring in external MI trainers. Sometimes, even when their budget allows for some high-quality training through an external trainer, staff attrition, and constantly bringing in “new hires” can mean that the size of a well trained staff group diminishes over a period of time. This means that for agencies that want to maintain a workforce that is “up to speed” in delivering MI-informed services, frequently repetition of MI training may be needed. Over time, such repeated training opportunities can get costly.

DEVELOPING IN-HOUSE TRAINERS IS A VERY COST/TIME EFFICIENT IDEA!

For agencies all across Canada we may have just the answer! We’re able to develop a custom-fit Train-New Trainers package for your agency. Our TNT package makes it possible to develop in-house trainers who can keep MI learning initiatives going, as needed, with no long-term need for external trainers or consultants. We can also design and deliver custom made training materials, curriculum content, instructor notes, course handouts, and a variety of training videos to outfit new trainers with everything they need to launch an in-house and in person MI training program. Such a training package becomes the exclusive property of the contracting agency. Ultimately, it becomes a “turn-key training kit” for new trainers which can easily save 100-200 hundred hours of a new trainer’s time by not having to develop all necessary training materials from scratch!

TRAINING YOUR PEOPLE TO TRAIN YOUR PEOPLE

Our train-the-trainer programs can be tailored to groups as small as four participants and as large as 14 (all from the same agency). Admission requirements vary slightly depending on several variables, but typically require at least 36 hours of MI training (introductory and advanced levels). Six or more months of experience using MI with real clients is also required. Some previous experience and comfort in presenting to adult groups is very helpful for those wanting to become new trainers.

WE WILL FIT THE TRAINING TO YOUR SCEHDULE

Our five-day Training New Trainers workshops include approximately 14 hours training in the objective measurement/assessment of MI skill using a standardized coding tool (the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity coding tool, also known as the MITI 4.2). Participants who have previously taken training in the use of the MITI 4.2 can sometimes participate in an abbreviated TNT of 21 hours duration.
