INTRO COVER LETTER: Greetings from LONDON, ONTARIO

A man who has saved millions of lives around the world. Not many people can say that.

I’m just finishing two workshops in Ontario this week. The first in Ottawa and this one – in London, Ontario. London is a beautiful little city – and is famous as the home of the world renown diabetes researcher and discoverer of insulin – Dr. Banting (of the “Banting and Best” team). His home is a museum here and people can obtain tours which include the bedroom and bed where Banting, that one famous day, suddenly sat up in bed in the middle of the night with a “Eureka!” moment wherein he discovered a hormone (insulin) that has since saved the lives of millions of people all over the world. I am a bit of a history buff and it is a real thrill for me to be able to stand in his lab and imagine the excitement that played out there when the big discovery was made. I’ve been there on a previous trip as well, and I’m going again tomorrow.

I’m lucky to have facilitated MI training for many Diabetes Educators over the past 15 years and they have taught me a great deal about MI. I think that’s because diabetes isn’t a disease that involves a quick medical “fix”. It requires significant personal and lifestyle change, on many levels. And so it is that people who work in the field tell me that the client always lets you know whether you are helping – or pushing. This week’s T.I.P. reinforces that learning MI doesn’t occur in a classroom. The classroom provides the education and the client supplies the learning.
